Why are computer software programs expensive? A lot of people have been wondering about this for many years now. Considering the low production cost of actual deliverables, what with the cost-efficient nature of media like CDs and DVDs as well as digital distribution through downloads, people do have the right to ask about the price attached to most software programs these days. The answer, however, is more complex. The prices we have to pay for them also cover the research and development invested by the creators, as well as payment for the use of their intellectual property. Without their ingenious contribution, we won’t be able to enjoy the benefits of their creation, after all.

Does this mean that we’re stuck with exorbitant prices? Not necessarily, as there are always more affordable alternatives for the budget-conscious folks: discount software.

Discount software is often offered when the said program has already served a good part of its market life. This shouldn’t be taken to mean that the this software is virtually useless, however. Most computer programs have a market life of 5 to 7 years, hence assuring the buyer of substantial mileage from his purchase of discount software.

Additionally, discount software is also offered for campaigns that desire a great launch. Some distributors would initially offer computer programs as discount software to get the word out about their newest releases. Word of mouth, after all, is the most powerful advertising vehicle. It would benefit the distributors, and it would most certainly benefit you.

One way of looking at it is this: there are three stages in the life cycle of a computer program when you could possibly catch it as discount software. First is during the launch, if the distributor would take that route. Second is in it midlife phase, when sales usually experience a slowdown. Third is towards the end of its shelf life, when discounts are offered to empty inventories for the newer models.

Purchasing discount software doesn’t mean you’re purchasing an inferior product. Every program has its particular use. Even if such discount software has served out its market life and new models are already available, if they continue to serve your needs, they’d still be great buys. After all, what would you do with superfluous features that you wouldn’t even be able to utilize, right?

Indeed, the first and most important step in choosing the right discount software for you is determining the purposes you’d need it for. If there is a good match, you’ll have a great buy.
